Wounded Altavista Soldier Stays Positive

Reporter: Carleigh Griffeth Altavista, VA- A soldier from Altavista is recovering after nearly being killed in Afghanistan. Chris Walker was clearing a site of explosive devices when one went off, throwing him 30 feet. He lost both of his lower arms and a leg. He's at Walter Reed Memorial Hospital in Maryland. He's been through so much, but he's very optimistic. He says he's not mad, and he's not upset, he's not even worrying about the future. The only thing he is complaining about is having to stay in bed.

And from the looks of things, he won't be there long. Walker's mother remembers it like it was yesterday. "I can't explain. I really can't explain the feeling that it, that you have when you get the call," said Donna Hammack, his mother. The call that her son lost three limbs and was clinging to life. "It's nothing that I'd wish on nobody else," said Hammack. Chris doesn't remember what happened. He doesn't remember going through countless surgeries. He doesn't even remember when exactly he realized he lost three of his limbs. What he does know is he's moving on. "You can't really let it get you down cause I mean. It happened. It's happened. I don't want to sit in this bed for the rest of my life. So I've got to get up. I've got to move. I've got to try and push on," said Walker. They're humble words from a true American hero who has the medals to prove it. But don't let him catch you praising him. He doesn't think he's done anything special. But he is setting a moving example for thousands of other wounded warriors. "He's moving on. He's still got a life, you know. And he's determined he's going to live it to the fullest," said Hammack. "The harder I work the sooner I can get back to having a normal life and doing regular everyday things. It may be a little different having to use prosthetic limbs. But it's still a life. You can't just sit here in a bed like, I'm done. I'm not going to try. You got to try. You're lucky enough to be alive already," said Walker. There are several fundraisers coming up for Walker. This weekend at Altavista's Uncle Billy's Day, his family will be selling awareness bracelets. On June 16, a motorcycle ride will be held in his honor.
